Hip Pain Q & A

What causes hip pain?

Hip pain often occurs due to a sprain suffered during sports activities. An acute injury, such as a car accident, can result in a broken or dislocated hip. Daily wear and tear makes your hip susceptible to overuse injuries and degenerative disease.

Some of the most common conditions responsible for hip pain include:

  • Bursitis
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Labral tears
  • Hip impingement
  • Tendonitis
  • Synovitis
  • Hip dysplasia

Without early treatment, many hip problems will get progressively worse.

Will I have symptoms in addition to pain?

There’s a good chance you’ll develop additional symptoms such as swelling, inability to put weight on your hip, and limited mobility or loss of movement. A problem in your hip joint can also cause pain in your thigh, knee, or buttocks.

In some cases, your hip pain may not be due to a hip problem. You can experience hip pain from a condition that originates in your knees or spine.

How do orthopedic specialists treat hip pain?

When you visit Dr. Regala for hip pain, he reviews your medical history, talks about your symptoms, and then begins the process of determining the true cause of your pain. In addition to a physical exam, he may order diagnostic imaging.

Traumatic injuries, such as a fracture, dislocation, or a complete ligament tear, require immediate surgery to ensure you don’t develop complications. Otherwise, your treatment includes options such as:

  • Activity modification
  • Resting your hip
  • Anti-inflammatory medications
  • Physical therapy
  • Corticosteroid injections
  • Viscosupplementation
  • Platelet-rich plasma (PRP)

PRP contains growth factors that help relieve pain, regulate inflammation, and accelerate the healing process. Dr. Regala produces PRP in the office by drawing your blood and using a centrifuge to separate the platelets. Then he immediately injects the concentrated platelets, your PRP, into the damaged area of your hip.

When conservative treatments don’t improve your symptoms, Dr. Regala may recommend minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery to repair the problem. If your hip is damaged by a fracture, advanced arthritis, or other conditions, you may be a good candidate for hip replacement surgery.
